STEEPLECHASE FAST FACT
Steeplechasing traces its roots to a two-horse ‘race’ between an Irish foxhunter, one Mr. Blake, and his friend Mr. O’Callaghan. In 1752, Blake questioned the ability and speed of O’Callaghan’s mount, prompting a challenge for a race across hunt country, from the Buttevant Church to St. Mary’s, visible only by its protruding steeple several miles away (hence the sport’s name). Both churches were located in Doneraile, County Cork. Sadly, history did not record the winner of this first ‘steeple race,’ but the tradition persists to this day as sport and business worldwide.
