All steeplechase jockeys on the U.S. circuit must use an ‘approved’ Pro-Cush whip when racing. The Pro-Cush is covered with soft felt from below the hand-hold down to the popper at the end, so that a horse is not inadvertently injured when being urged. Riders also use their whips to help ‘steer’ youngsters; a green horse may tend to veer right or left racing into the fences. The rider can remind the horse to remain on a straight path with a light tap’ down the shoulder or on the flank.
