During that debut, Discreet Cat displayed an interesting phenomenon. This occurrence is known by some top handicappers as the “hidden big win.” As most people with a rudimentary knowledge of horse racing know, the larger the distance by which a horse wins, the more impressive the win becomes.
A horse that wins it’s debut by 10 or 15 lengths will draw attention to itself, and maybe even attract potential buyers. However, when a horse wins by such a margin, one must doubt the competition facing the horse. One must also doubt whether the horse improved his or her fitness from the race.
If, on the other hand, another horse wins by three lengths, but it is another six lengths back to the horse that came in third, this actually may turn out to be a better horse than the horse that won by nine. He may have improved coming out of the race, and may have actually beaten a horse.
