Thornton Hill point-to-point
returns to Sperryville Saturday
By Betsy Parker
Times Newspapers Staff Writer
Bucking the tradition of Virginia’s spring point-topoint
season, the Thornton Hill Hounds Point-toPoint
kicks off the Virginia fall steeplechase season this Saturday, Sept. 16 at the hunt’s kennels in Sperryville.
Post time is 12:30 p.m. for the first of at least eight races. With recent rains making for good training conditions in the area, and given the fact that no other point-topoint prep exists on the circuit, entries are expected to be strong at the meet. Additionally, Thornton Hill also bucks the “pots and pans” tradition - referring to the silver trophies that are the winners’ only reward on the spring circuit - by offering $500 and $1,000 purses.
Races include two over hurdles, three on the flat and three over timber, including the featured James Fletcher memorial open timber. After the horse races, foxhounds will take to the course, following a drag line in the Gone Away hound race.
Thornton Hill Farm is located south of Sperryville on U.S. Route 522. Admission options range from general admission to railside tents ai ’ homestretch tailgate parking. Ticket details are at (540) 937-8274. Complete entries can be found online at www.morvenpark.org/ceo.
