At least one afternoon each week, someone checking out a book at the library is served by a woman with a Master’s degree in library science. That’s Grace Sims of Washington, Va., who has been a volunteer at the Rappahannock County Public Library for 23 years. That means ^ six-hour day, once a week, since 1973. Sims, an avid reader, is these days in the midst of a biography of Teddy Roosevelt.
Other library volunteers work shifts of varying length - four or five or six hours.
There’s plenty of work to be done at the Senior Center in Washington. Much of it is accomplished by Harriet Lewis and Sadie Norman.
