As the meeting came to a close, Dr. Chappell and the school board discussed at length the AYP scores that were released by the state education board, and the low SOL math scores for the sixth and seventh grade.
Chappell notified the School board that he had asked the state superintendent Billy Cannaday Jr., to remove the sixth and seventh grade scores from the official state-calculated Accreditation Pass Rates for the schools.
“According to our calculations,” said Chappell, “The Rappahannock County Elementary School will likely fall below the 70 percent benchmark to make accreditation.”
Chappell said that some school systems that double tested their sixth and seventh graders were able to perform well on the SOLs. Double testing is when advanced math students in Algebra classes are given both the advanced test and the grade level test. *'
“The state recommended that we not double test the sixth and seventh graders, so we followed those recommendation,” said Chappell. “I fully support the SOL tests, but I can’t believe that they put them into place to embarrass and punish schools for following state recommendations.”
“What we have now is a bad report card,” said School Board Chairman Wesley Mills. “They won’t nose into our schools until they receive subsequent tests with the same results.” ; •
He mentioned that in the future the school should double test in spite of state recommendations. “Its obvious that we need to begin double testing,” he added, “We can play the game if thats what they want.” --— 1 ■» i1 j
