“The best flat rider I ever saw taking a cross was Mike Hole,” Rera said. “Garret Gomez, too. The jump rider who had great hands and the best balance was (Hall of Famer) Jerry Fishback.”

Riding the racehorse with a cross in the reins, Rera said, helps “keep the horse collected and balanced to achieve his max performance. Cross-country it mostly helps with the riders’ own balance. It is a great skill to master. It really helps a rider to stay centered.”
