County in 1997, breeders’ funds in Virginia were more of the virtual, than literal, variety. There were a few incentives offered at other mid-Atlantic racetracks, but, other than that, Thoroughbred breeders simply had to want their mares to foal in Virginia for emotional, rather than financial, reasons.
That’s all changed.
The healthy Virginia Breeders’ Fund pays out hefty bonus prizes to Virginia-bred horses winning races at Colonial’s summer Thoroughbred meet as well as continuing to reward national excellence if locally bred horses win races around the nation.
Now, add the Old Dominion Turf Championship series to the list of bonus payouts. Races are held at fall steeplechase meets - this year at Foxfield, Virginia Fall, Morven Park and the International Gold Cup - and are limited to Virginia-bred or
