-sired horses. Points are awarded in the first four races, with the $20,000 final at the Gold Cup to determine the series champ. Horses must start in at least one of the first four races to qualify for the championship. If oversubscribed, horses with the most points in series races will be preferred in the final.
The Virginia Steeplechase Association flat championship includes all flat races on the circuit, other than the Old Dominion series. Races in this series are carded at Thornton Hill, Foxfield, Virginia Fall, Morven Park, Gold Cup, Oak Ridge and Montpelier.
Flat races in both series range in length from six furlongs (the Old Rag dash at Thornton Hill) to a mile and six furlongs (the Fegentri international amateur race at the International Gold Cup.)
