Melissa begins the day with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance before teaching Benjamin his first class: the study of Scripture verses.
She then proceeds to teach her son kindergarten-level history, science, poetry, writing, and math.
“The most important thing for me is to provide my son with all these subjects from a Christian perspective,” she added.
A call to educate
Melissa said that her decision to home school was based on her calling as a mother, including the responsibility of raising them according to Christian principles.
She quotes Deuteronomy 6:6-7:
“These words, which I command you this day, shall be on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.”
Although Melissa says she fretted a little as she prepared for the upcoming year, she says that had always planned on homeschooling her children.
“My husband and I discussed it before we took our wedding vows,” she said. “From day one, we knew how we would raise our children.”
She has enrolled in the ABEKA books program, a popular homeschooling organization for Christian families that is based in Pensacola, Florida. The program seeks to help families provide their children with a quality education from a Christian perspective.
“The curriculum really lays it out, says Melissa. “Its easy to follow, and I just go one day at a time.”
