Well, very briefly, the story goes something like this.
About 1603, King James I of England ‘owned’ everything in {he British Empire that previous kings had not granted to others. How was this possible?
Because (1) he (James) was the decider and he said so; and (2) his sea power expanded his holdings (only peacefully, of course); and (3) his Privy Councils worked out any messy details. Let’s see, privy - does that mean things were thought out in the ...? Oh, never mind.
In James’ mind, his dominion at that time included all of North America. The French and Spanish, to say nothing of the Native Americans, had other ideas. The annoying disagreements would be worked out later, and by others, of course.
Given this extensive inventory of raw land, James seems rather stingy in his original charter to the Virginia Company in 1606: 100 miles inland and 50 miles north and south of Jamestown. A mere 10,000 square miles. How many ways were there going to be to slice and dice this puny parcel over the years?
In 1609, Sir Edwin Sandys wrote - and James signed - a much sweeter deal for the Virginia Company.
