The Wakefield Lady Owls Varsity Volleyball team won their opening game against the Front Royal flames last Tuesday. The Owls won the game after winning three straight matches against the Front Royal homeschoolers group team. The Owls’ first match was won handily at 2511 as the girls exhibited skills and disciplines that they had fine tuned for the upcoming year. The Lady Flames proved to be a strong opponent in the second round, matching the Owls up to a 17-17 tie. The Owls pulled ahead at 20-19 scoring four points to finish at 25-21. The final match was won at 24-13, which allowed the Owls to claim their first victory. “We have an excellent team this year,” said Varsity Coach Suzanne Zylonis, “We have returning Varsity players that proving to be strong team leaders.” Senior Chantal Paul together with Juniors Katherine Russo, Emma Clark, Taylor Hammelman and Cetilie Greve, leads the rest of the team which includes sophomores, Kristina Stone and Elida Opitz, and freshmen Margaret Murray and Racel Holmes. Christine Pankow is the only eighth-grader on the team proving her worth as varsity material. “She definitely put on a noteworthy performance with good defense and some impressive kills,” said Zylonis about her youngest player.
The L$dy Owls . were unable to repeat their success as they lost 3-1 against Highland .Hawks and 3-0 against their biggest rival, the Fighting Owls from Wakefield located in The Plains.
