Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard bagged is record 12th victory in the New York Turf Writers Cup the last week of the Saratoga meet, as William Pape’s Mixed Up carried jockey Danielle Hodsdon to a one-length victory over Top of the Bill in the 65th running of this Grade 1, steeplechase event at Saratoga Race Course.
Tbp of the Bill is trained in Millwood by Jimmy Day. Hirapour, heavy favorite for a second Turf Writers’ win, was a well-beaten fifth. Trainer Doug Fout, of The Plains, reported that Hirapour injured his right front ankle in the dull effort and that the 10-year-old was to undergo surgery Sept. 6 to fish out a bone chip.
