Homeschooling in Rappahannock begins at various times throughout the year, with each family following their own schedules and extra-circular activities.
As tropical storm Ernesto blew in September 1, closing area schools, the Burdick family discussed their plans for the upcoming school year in the comfort of their home.
This year, Jane Burdick has assembled a curriculum as she begin teaching her twin sons, Tyler and Austin, for their first year of high school.
“We just take it a year at a time, and have a blast during school,” says Jane about her homeschooling experience, “I want them to have a love of learning in a style that suits them and is focused on thing that they like.”
The boys flourish under their own schedule, spending a great deal of their time on their interests. They are both double black belts in Karate, work on honing their art skills, and spend time with their horses.
Tyler and Austin take art lessons with Patty Rice, an artist from Warrenton who is also a homeschooling mother who previously worked in the Cochran gallery, and recently finished a home art studio.
