• Two to tango: All colors are a result of at least 16 known factors that interact to produce each unique color and pattern. There are but two colors that all other colors are built off of. These are black and chestnut. Every horse of every breed will have a black or a chestnut base coat, regardless of its physical appearance.
• Hot-tempered redhead? The belief that chestnut Thoroughbred mares, in particular, are hot-headed may have some basis in fact. Chestnut hair, like red hair on a human redhead, tends to be thinner than black, brown or even gray hair. Therefore, a chestnut horse has a light hair coat and may get a bad rap as uber-sensitive to stimuli.
