As Durkee’s mount lands running from the jump, see how the jockey splits his hands wide to quickly shorten his reins, shown above. At right, the reins are back to the correct length and Durkee is working to take back the cross in his reins: see how the right rein is being tossed across to the top of the left rein. Soon, Durkee will be holding both the left and right rein in the left hand, for a classic ‘bridged’ rein position, also known as a cross, for balance, support and strength.
