Just in time, the rains came. And with them, they brought the entries.
Sprouting like mushrooms on a pasture, the entries overflow for Saturday’s Thornton Hill Hounds Point-to-Point, the kickoff for Virginia’s lengthy fall steeplechase season.
Area horsemen struggled to train horses on hard ground, or ship to gallop, through July, but early summer rains in June, and late summer rains in August evened out the footing.
It will show on the program page Saturday.
Even the featured Fletcher memorial open timber, hard to fill this early in the season, attracted 11 entries, headed by last year’s race winner Fields of Omagh. Randy Rouse’s gelding used the point-to-point prep as a tightener for his October International Gold Cup score.
