on the birds and is light enough yet lethal enough to serve as a very good dove piece. That is when doves fly within range.

Last year I watched from a high spot above one of the two lakes on the farm as several fellows drew dove after dove to their stand and dropped a good 90 percent of them. At a break in the action I ventured down and discovered they were using two mechanical dove decoys stuck On 6-inch poles. These contraptions looked just like the little brown birds. That, and being at the shallow end of the lake, I think, made for quick limits.

Remember, if you want to hunt any migratory birds you must first have your Virginia hunting license and then obtain your Harvest Information Program (HIP) number. There are two ways of getting an HIP number; you can get it online at wwwvahip.com or you can call 1(888)788-9772.

Depending on when you call or go online, plan on spending about six minutes navigating through the prompts. Do not attempt to get your HIP number while driving to your dove shoot. I can attest to the frustration level generated when you wait until the last minute and the lines are jammed and you are navigating some serious country roads.

Until next time, remember to cherish, protect and conserve the outdoors while sharing it with others.
