According to Parker, Federal Election Commission law allows that candidates may be excluded from debates if polling data does not show a 15 percent or higher showing. But that rule is a bit nebulous, she explained, as it doesn’t specify a polling source and allows that even competing candidates might provide the information.
With at least three major public Senate candidate debates scheduled, the rule - and absence of invite - is proving frustrating, Parker described. Still, the FEC law would not supersede an incumbent’s wishes, she said, and if Allen “says let (me) in the debate,” the debate sponsors would.
“Allen has said publicly it’s OK with him,” Parker said.
A press spokesperson for Allen contacted Friday for confirmation said he was familiar with Parker and her campaign but was busy and would call back later. As of deadline, he still had not called.
