from his Ozark Farm in Hume. Poe often invites a few friends to join him as he exercises hounds in the late summer. Any day spent with Poe nets stories of hunting and local lore.
In late August, when he took his young hounds off their couples for the first time, Poe emerged laughing from the woods to describe how a little bear cub, startled by the presence of the hounds, scampered up a big tree. Unable to cling the very large trunk, the bear plummeted to earth, right in the path of Poe’s horse. Poe chuckled. Only in Hume, I guess. Lifetime in the field
Poe was bom at what is now called Paddington Farm 86 years ago. He was raised the other side of Keyser Road at a farm now owned by Washington lawyer Lynn Coleman. Ozark Farm is within a mile of both.
He can still recall when, just old enough to cling onto his pony’s back, he joined father Ollie and other farmers for Sunday hunts in the area. Back then (not now, fortunately) womenfolk were left behind to attend church.
