The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has recently released the draft version of the 2006-2015 Deer Management Plan. Through the strategic use of certain programs like the Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP), the Deer Control Assistance Program (DCAP), kill permits, arid the Deer Population Reduction Program (DPRP), staff at VDGIF plans to lower the deer population to a level known as “cultural carrying capacity.” CCC is defined as “the number of deer in a defined area that can coexist compatibly with humans.” This changes drastically from one community to another, based on factors like population density and topography.
