Doctors have diagnosed a second student at Rappahannock County High School with a MRSA staph infection, Rappahannock County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Bob Chappell said in a press release on Tuesday.
Chappell said school officials received written notice from a doctor’s office that a second student at the high school was diagnosed with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, a strain of staph bacteria resistant to treatment with penicillin and other similar antibiotics.
The student was treated for the infection and released, Chappell said.
The diagnosis is the serond case of MRSA in the recent scare at the high school, and the third this year, to be confirmed by Rappahannock County school officials. The first case was diagnosed in August, though the schools did not learn of it until Oct 10, Chappell said in a previous press release.
The first two students diagnosed played on the school football team. Chappell previously stated that a number of students hn the team had been treated for MRSA as a precaution, though none had been officially diagnosed ... _

Following the first case diagnosed this month, Chappell dosed Rappahannock County high school and elementary school for a day and a half Staff disinfected the schools and school buses with specially formulated bleach and Lysol. Chappell said in the press release that staff will continue to disinfect surfaces at the schools.
