Rappahannock County has two representatives in the State General Assembly: Del. Todd Gilbert, R-15th, and Sen. Mark Obenshain, R-26th. And both are running for re-election on Nov. 6.
While Gilbert is running unopposed for his second term in the House of Delegates, Obenshain is being challenged in his bid for a second term in the State Senate. Maxine Hope Roles, a Democrat from Luray and a newcomer to the political arena, is hoping to pull off an upset against the incumbent from Harrisonburg.
Roles is also a longtime criminal-justice advocate and her views on rehabilitation for nonviolent offenders are the main reason she was motivated to run against Obenshain. The senator’s criticism of and call to shut down Gemeinschaft, a drug-rehabilitation community in Harrisonburg, raised Roles’ ire and inspired her to challenge Obenshain.
A look at the fund-raising disparity between the two candidates shows just how much of an underdog Roles is in this election. Obenshain has raised more than 20 times as much money as she has so far. As of Wednesday, the incumbent had raised $190,092 compared to Roles’ $9,293, according to the Virginia Public Access Project.
itiuies has not accepted contributions from corporations or lobbyists. Her funding has come from individuals and local Democratic committees.
“I’ve done it on a shoe string and I’ve pulled it off” she said. “I’ve been to every event I’ve been invited to. Whatever’s been expected of me, I’ve been there.”
The 26th District includes the city of Harrisonburg, the entirety of Page, Rappahannock, Shenandoah and Warren counties and part of Rockingham County.
