According to the National Climatic Data Center, Virginia has endured its driest Maythrough-September period since 1930 and its fourth-dnest since the center began measuring statewide precipitation in 1895. Virginia’s average precipitation for May through September is about 20 inches, but the commonwealth only received some 14 inches this year, according to the centers data.
The U.S. Geological Survey has stations to measure streamflow on three rivers that flow through Rappahannock. Battle Run is measured near Laurel Mills, the Hazel River at Rixeyville and the Rappahannock River at Remington. On Tuesday, all three were running at all-time lows for Oct. 16, according to USGS data.
