Sometimes, Mother knows best.
About seven years ago, Lynne Kritter enrolled her daughter Elena in a summer volleyball camp. She thought that Elena needed to interact with other children and learn to play a sport.
“Like all little kids, Elena hated it,” Lynne Kritter recalled, “but if I had asked her about going to camp, she would have said no. I hear some parents say that they can’t get their kids to do anything. Well, sometimes you just have to put them in something.”
She made the right choice.
Elena Kritter is one of the top players in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She captured All-Bull Run District, All-Region B and All-State honors a year ago and led Rappahannock County High School’s varsity team to a fourth-place finish in the state tournament. Her stellar play has the Lady Panthers poised to challenge Strasburg for the district title this fall.
However, it would be a mistake to say that volleyball consumes Kritter’s every thought.
Sure, the game keeps her occupied nearly year-round. She plays for various club teams as well as the U.S. Junior Olympic volleyball program.
But she can find other stages to showcase her talents. She is the lead guitarist for Krush, the only all-girl rock-and-roll band in Culpeper. She also has performed as a member of the Young Company Theater of the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton.
If that is not enough to keep her occupied, she also helps raise and show dwarf goats and milks cows on her family’s
