North America is divided into 11 zones. Zone 1 is the coldest and Zone 11 is the warmest. Generally, the colder zones are found at higher latitudes and elevations.
According to the map, the northern half of Fauquier County is in Zone 6 and the southern half is in Zone 7. In fact, Chinese snowballs are hardy 1° zones 7-9. Wollam’s form is technically in Zone 6.
“It’s marginal here,” says Wollam of the Chinese snowball’s adaptability to our climate. But the shrub is not just surviving. It is thriving.
Wollam recalls the cold spell Fauquier County had in March as a testament to the plant’s hardiness.
“We had ten days where it never got out of freezing, and that was after a week of 70degree temperatures,” he said. “That was a real test for these plants.” The Chinese snowball didn’t suffer, he believes, because it was well-established.
*1 am convinced because of the lack of snowfall, we are almost in Zone 7 now,” Wollam said. “That means gardeners can reliably grow many more plants.”
