Craig Jebson, president of Country Water Systems, said he did not know whether the problem was with the pump’s wiring or motor, so he planned for both and ordered a new pump.
The next day, Jebson determined that only the pump wiring needed to be fixed.
Council members were then left with a $4,500 pump they no longer needed. And to top it oft) there was a $685 restocking fee if they decided to return it.
The question then was who would pay the fee. Country Water Systems’ Jebson said that typically the customer pays the fee in such a situation, though he offered to shoulder it if the town refused. But in that case, he said, the company would not make any more emergency purchases for the town.
Town Clerk Laura Dodd said the town’s insurance paid all but $500 of the $5,776 repair bill for the short-circuited pump.
After the new pump is installed, the town will keep the old one as a backup.
