Creeping into
communities
For 30 years, MRSA was confined to health care settings. But in the late 1990s the disease began to prop up in communitybased settings.
“They’re two different strains of bacteria,” said Nicole Carr, spokesperson for the Center of Disease Control in Atlanta. “The MRSA in the health care setting would start in the skin and get into the bloodstream. It’s far more dangerous. With the community-based MRSA it’s mostly skin-infections. Most go away with an antibiotic other than penicillin. But some cases can be life-threatening. We’re not sure why some cases can be mild and some cases can be so severe because it’s a relatively new strain of bacteria. But it’s definitely something we are keeping an eye on.”
