mighty roaring fire, we traverse the living room into the kitchen to reward our effort with cherished liquid chocolate.
A simple mixture of 1 1/2 cups of powdered milk, half a cup of sugar and a quarter-cup of powdered baking cocoa is the base of our soon-to-be winter existence. We keep this sweet powdered nectar in a specially decorated canister that is saved just for such occasions. Although one could use the cocoa mixture as is, we with discerning tastes have not completed the ritual.
As is the case in many families, each member of my clan has distinctly different taste and so we gather goodies that will customize each cup with flavors we each favor. Extracts of any kind can be added to a third of a cup of powder mix and a mugful of water: vanilla, peppermint, orange or almond. We also enjoy using candy canes to stir the piping hot quaff or letting caramels melt into a dreamy ooze in the cocoa.
Now, because we also happen to love our sugar, the mahogany-hued delight would not be complete without the contrasting color of a mountain of whipped cream or chubby marshmallows atop.
Once our bellies are warm and happy we are serene and content with the knowledge that we are prepared for whatever Mother Nature and Jack Frost have cooked up for us for the near future. That is, until we see that first snowflake
