1978 U.S. Senate race, he won the state’s GOP nomination. However, while returning home from a campaign trip in the Shenandoah Valley, the elder Obenshain died in a plane crash in Chesterfield County. The Republicans then nominated John Warner, who went on to win the Senate seat.
Obenshain and his wife Suzanne have two children, Anne Tucker, 16, and Sam, 14. They live in Harrisonburg.
