Broil apples (about 4 inches from heat) five minutes. Sprinkle sugar mixture evenly over top of apples. Return apples to broiler. Broil till sugar bubbles and starts to brown — about five minutes more. Watch apples carefully so they don’t burn. Serve immediately with optional garnish, if desired.
