The next morning Kidwell was rushed off for surgery to clean out the sore that was now the size of an orange. In the operating room, his temperature continued rising.
Minutes later, his blood pressure dropped. His pulse stopped. And his heart quit beating.
Mark Kidwell, 16 years old, was dying on the operating table.
Doctors fought to save him They zapped his chest with a defibrillator. Nothing. They zapped him again. Nothing.
“I was basically dead,” Kidwell said. “People don’t know how powerful MRSA can be. It’s the scariest thing that’s ever happened to me. You’ve got to be cautious and make sure that you take care of and cover any open wounds no matter how small they may be.”
On the next zap, the heart started. He regained his pulse. His blood pressure rose.
