Steeplechase trainers can take their pick of fat purses this weekend, with two premier jump meets slated Saturday, Oct. 20. One of them is Fauquier’s richest fall program, the International Gold Cup races at Great Meadow. The other is the $600,000 Far Hills Races in New Jersey, which includes the $300,000 Breeders’ Cup hurdle (grade I.)
Purses are in excess of $190,000 at the Gold Cup meet in The Plains, with seven races carded, plus junior races. Post time is 1 p.m.
Headlining Saturday’s card is the $50,000 International Gold Cup timber stakes, 3 1/2 miles over the championship course. Among nominees were 2005 winner Fields of Omagh and *06 runner-up Seeyouattheevent (fourth in this spring’s Virginia Gold Cup over the same course.) Nominee Mr. Bombastic. was second here this spring.
Other races on the program include three over hurdles, two on the flat - an international invitational and the $20,000 finals of the Old Dominion Turf Championship, and the popular cross-country Steeplethon ‘chase. A junior field masters chase opens the day at 11 a.m.
Jockeys could be at a premium due to direct competition from the New Jersey meet.
Six hours up the road in Far Hills, the rich Breeder’s Cup headlines the six-stakes card, including the $50,000 New Jersey Hunt Cup timber stakes. Erin Go Bragh, Allimac and Music To My Ears were nominated to both the Hunt Cup at Far Hills and the International; final entries closed after press time Tuesday.
