“Fm lucky that I didn’t lose my leg or die,” Kidwell said. “It’s the worst pain Fve ever felt. Fve had broken bones, tom ligaments, but this was the worst. I never cry, but this stuff made me cry. I lost 20 pounds - from 168 to 148. You’ve got to be careful because this stuff can kill you.”
Just last week, a second Panthers football player was hospitalized with a MRSA infection.
Sophomore John Mello believes that he got it from playing football.
“From what I understand, a kid from Bishop Walsh had MRSA and I guess I got it from tackling him,” Mello said. "The disease is spread by skin-to-skin contact, so that’s how I think I got it.”
Mello’s MRSA was diagnosed after Rappahannock County played Timber Ridge. Two days after the game, Mello’s elbow swelled. Eventually it crept up his arm and into his shoulder
He underwent three surgeries last week at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville
“My arm was twice its normal size,” Mello said. “They said if I would have waited a day or two, I would have lost my arm.
