All in the family
Bit of Whimsy was bred by Bonner Young and Joyce Rowand, my sister and mother. She is co-owned by that duo and Gerald McManis, and the scene in the winner’s circle was similar to others that we’ve all shared before: busy and buoyant. This win marks the 19th stakes victory, and the third grade 1 winner, in the horse family that we became a part of 27 years ago.
In 1980, my sister and I decided that we needed to spark up our lives by getting into the horse business. We went to the Keeneland sakes and bought two yearling fillies, and we both loved one of them instantly and kinda tolerated the other one. The one we loved, we were certain, would be the one to make all the headlines, win all the big races, foal all the stakes winners. The other one (and that’s what we called her, “The Other One”) we thought might become valuable because she was about to have a half-sister by Seattle Slew, and that meant something in those days.
The Other One was long in the back, plain in the head, and had two splints on her too-short legs. Now, what was it again that we say in horseracing? Oh, yeah, “looks can be deceiving.”
