Maxine Roles: The challenger

Until this past winter, Maxine Hope Roles never, had any political ambitions. She and her husband, John, had full schedules operating a transmission and auto repair facility in Warren County and a small used-car lot in Page County.
In addition to her work and family, Roles was serving as an executive board member of Virginia CURE (Citizens United for the Rehabilitation of Errants). It was her work as a criminal-justice advocate that led her to enter the political arena.
The 44-year-old began mulling a run for the State Senate in February after the incumbent Sen. Mark Obenshain criticized a community for drug and alcohol offenders in Harrisonburg called Gemeinschaft, which is German for “community.”
Obenshain said Gemeinschaft was set up to help drug abusers from the Shenandoah Valley, but had become a destination for offenders from around the commonwealth. He also said the community posed a danger to the public by bringing individuals with a high rate of recidivism to the area.
“It was untrue,” Roles said. “In my ideas, if you ask him to give you the numbers and the truth, I bet you he doesn’t have any of the numbers. He doesn’t know and it’s his job to know.”
