In answer to a question on the staff of the Clerk’s Office, Ms. Bruce explained that all the work, inlcuding secretarial duties, was handled by the” Clerk and the Deputy Clerk. Mrs. Smith, Deputy for over 18 years, retires soon, said Ms. Bruce, and will be replaced by Karen Bear. She noted that the position opening had been advertised during the summer and that she'd interviewed applicants for two months before hiring Mrs. Bear.
General Assembly
George Beard, Rappahannock's representative in the Virginia General Assembly's House of Delegates, described his freshman year as a legislator as "the most interesting thing I’ve done in my life." Beard, a Republican, awarded high praise to John Warren Cooke, Democratic Speaker, who runs the General Assembly fairly and with decorum, according to Beard. He noted that Cooke was the first Speaker in the Democratic controlled Assembly to put Republicans on committees, thus creating a "good bipartisan organization" where members vote “in the interests of the people rather than in the interests of the party."
