To the editor:
I am a senior citizen and write this letter solely as an expression of my personal opinion. However, the letter has been motivated by the letter of Truman Keesey. • 1 note Mr. Keesey quotes from a publication of the National Council of Senior Citizens. I assume Mr. Keesey considers this publication an authoritative source as to what represents "our interests," i.e. Senior Citizen's interests. I, for one, am not a member of the aforesaid Council and I categorically deny he can speak for what I consider to be my interests.
1 am not a member of any pressure group and resent the implication that any such groups can represent my interests. 1 am guided by what I consider to be the public interests which includes, among other things, the interest of my daughter and my grandchildren, and 1 believe most senior citizens ace. .<.. c or reap o n d i n g ty motivated. Irt my opinion, any person concerned primarily with the limited life span of senior citizens is not serving the public interest.
Furthermore, 1 categorically state the National Council of Senior Citizens does not have any truly representative number of senior citizens within its membership. In addition. 1 enquire as to what procedure was followed to determine what its small membership actually believes about the performance of Congressman Robinson. Thus the National Council of Senior Citizens is in no position to express an informed opinion as to what is "our interests” and its opinion is irrelevant and highly presumptuous and personally offensive.
Likewise Earle Frazier, who allegedly led the socalled farmer's strike, represents a miniscule proportion of the farmers as a group as any local inquiry will confirm. Does Mr. Keesey feel his opinion informed. representative, and unbiased? If not, why mention it.
As Mr. Keesey should know, public utility rates in Virginia are controlled by the Corporation Commission which guarantees them a fair percentage return on their investments after legitimate expenses are deducted. Interstate regulation is controlled by the Federal Power Commission. Any expenses incident to such regulations are deductible and increase utility rates.
In view of Mr. Keesey’s apparent confidence in federal regulation, does he feel the Federal Power Commission would authorize or permit public utilities to operate in violation of our antitrust laws?
