There are many aspects of Virginia’s Coastal Resources Management Program where program development activities are currently in progress or nearing completion. Some of the more important projects are described below. PERMITTING - The Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VRMRC) has been working on simplifying the permit process for minor shoreline projects in order to help alleviate the delays that are currently involved in that process. VMRC is negotiating with the Corps of Engineers to increase the number of “general permits” they will give Virginia in order to facilitate the administration of small, non-1 controversial projects which can be handled at the state and local levels. Criteria for these general permits are now being developed. This could considerably reduce the time it takes to get a permit.
VRMC has also developed a single permit application for minor projects to be used by applicants to obtain permits from all three levels of government - local, state and federal. A joint application for the State Water Control Board and VMRC has been in use since September, 1977. The Corps of Engineers has now agreed to the use of this application.
