Student discipline and drug use are major problems facing American public schools, according to the 10th annual Gallup Poll on Education released in October. Gallup found, however, that parents whose children attend public schools hold them in “much higher esteem" than do private school parents or people withour children.
For the ninth time in 10 years, discipline tops the list of problems Americans think public schools have, with 25 per cent of parents who have children in public schools registering that complaint. In addition, student use of marijuana and other drugs has again taken a high place in the public's list of concerns. after dropping in the ratings last year.
