Philadelphia, Pa , Oct 17 Jack Schramm regional director for the En vironmental Protection Agency has announced a number of additional research grants for 1979. Over 2 million dollars has been allocated to a number of Bay area research facilities to conduct indepth investigations into water quality effects caused by excessive nutrients The problem being investigated is rapid uncontrolled growth of algae and other organisms which deplete the oxygen content of the water When oxygen depletion becomes critical a condition called Eutrophication occurs and the beneficial life in the waters dies The following are among the research programs listed in the EPA an nouncement:
The Chesapeake Research Consortium will examine water quality trends using historic data. They will define the problems of excessive nutrients or enrichment of the Bay and identify where additional information is required to define and manage the problem of over enrichment. The information obtained will be used to make water quality computer models more useful and to develop better analytic methods and water quality management programs plus additional research which needs to be done
