Oppose* The ERA
Unlike his opponent, Democrat Andrew Miller who favors it, Warner said he is opposed to the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) which Virignia has yet to ratify.
He said Virginia’s current law in his judgment is adequate, and "therefore we need not resort to amending the federal constitution with language which undoubtedly will remain in the courts indefinitely...language which holds out false hopes to women.”
Throughout his public life, Warner said he had always “worked toward equal rights, for men and women, equal pay, equal ability, for recognition, and I’ve got a long record in public office of fostering those goals.”
No Stand On Park
Asked if he would support the expansion of the battlefield park at Manassas, Warner said that as Bicentennial administrator he had urged the “maximum possible preservation of historical sites.”
But as “an agricultural businessman, a landowner in this area I can certainly see the side of the landowners (who are opposed).”
Before passing on legislation to expand the park, he said "I would go personally and conduct an open hearing to give a complete invitation to everybody to come and hear them out...”
He said it’s “another example where we have witnessed the federal government going in without fully permitting the citizenry to express themselves publicly.”
Inflation Highest
Priority
His preferred committee assignments would be Armed Services, Agriculture and Budget.
The single most important problem he would like to see resolved?
Twofold, Warner said. One is inflation, which has “a slightly higher priority." The other is national defense.
And he would also like to see "minimized the intrusion of the federal government into our daily lives. That ranges all the way from taxation to regulation."
