As part of its- overall program to investigate Submerged Aquatic Vegetation SAW the EPA recently awarded grants to conduct distribution and abundance surveys of the Bay grasses, examine the role of SAV communities in the Chesapeake Bay and their relationships to fish and wildlife resources and water quality, and investigate the decline of these grasses The investigations will be done by the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences, American University, and the University of Maryland Additional grants will be awarded The ultimate goal of the SAV Program is to determine the relationship of Bay grass communities to the Bay s water quality and to recommend environmental parameters for the growth, reproduction
