The specimens in jars enable students to see the different characteristics that divide animal life into genus, species and phylum in a much more effective manner than looking at pictures in a text book ever could.
Wood’s entire classroom is geared to the principle that there’s no substitute for the real thing—whether it’s a living plant that illustrates leaf arrangement or a pickled insect whose physical characteristics show clearly why it belongs in a particular category in the animal kingdom. Wood’s classroom makes biology, the study of life, come alive.
And in his own small way. Wood seems to be as committed to saving the taxpayers’ money as are members of the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors.
One lonely grasshopper crawling around an aquarium filled with lichen, liverwort and other moss plants is part of an experiment. "I’m trying to fatten him up—for dissection," added Wood almost ruefully after a few seconds’ pause. “It gets expensive to buy specimens."
