As Rappahannock children prepare for their annual trek from door to door, parents should be concerned about the safety of their children as they set off in search of treats.
Many Halloween activities are potential hazards which parents and motorists should be aware of. The highest incidence of accidents involving pedestrians is among children between the ages of five and nine. Many of these accidents occur between intersections and the number of this type of accident increases sharply at night, especially in residential areas.
Children need to be able to see where they are going. Parents should make sure that the child’s vision is not obstructed by masks and that costumes are not loose fitting garments that may cause the child to trip and fall.
The News offers the following safety tips:

—Use make-up instead of masks or headgear that obstructs the child’s vision.
