Perhaps one of the most valuable ways to determine the health of the Chesapeake Bay and the quality of its waters is to examine what is happening to its fin fish and shellfish. The Bay’s watermen and charter boat skippers are perhaps the most diligent observers of the gradual degradation of its water quality. These men have two important ways of noting the changes which have occurred. Both the sport and commercial watermen have been observing for years the diminishing catches of striped bass, shad, and hardhead, while shellfish harvesters have noted the decreasing numbers of oysters, clams, and crabs. While some say these are perhaps the results of natural biological cycles, the watermen feel the adverse trends have continued for so long that they msut be the result of pollution of the Bay and its major tributaries.
