Mason Carbaugh, Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services says Virginia has received a federal grant of $106,708 that will assist our cattle industry to develop a more effective marketing system on a statewide and, perhaps a regional basis by the use of tel-oauction.
The grant by the U. S. Department of Agriculture is for a cooperative marketing project to be conducted by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and Virginia Tech’s Department of Agricultural Economics and will include feasibility studies for the possible use of more sophisticated electronic equipment.
The Commissioner pointed out that this system should increase competition for culled cows by increasing the number of packers electronically present at the sales, reduce farm-to-slaughter marketing costs, and enable the packer to receive a more desirable product.
