The job ahead
The continuing assault upon the Bay and its rivers will not be halted by any legislative or bureaucratic body. It will be halted by the efforts of the concerned public.
A year or so ago at one of the many conferences on the local waters it was stated there was, in hand, the money, the knowledge, the manpower, and the legal authority to save our waters. Lacking was a committment to save the Bay and j|s rivers, to place someone in charge, and to assemble the resources, set the priorities, and get to work.
In the programs described in these pages some of this is now under way. However, if we had in hand control of all of the problems, we would find that the technical solutions are, for the most part, well understood. The remaining problems are political, social, and economic. They can only be Solved by the public. They must exert political pressure, awaken the social responsibilities of all who live upstream, and be willing to accept the economic costs of saving the Bay and its rivers. That job is up to you. There are many opportunities to participate, so get in and help. Your children, grandchildren, and all of those who work on, live near, or enjoy the Bay and its rivers will bless you.
