Celebration of America’s first official Thanksgiving will be held Nov. 5 at Berkeley Plantation, some weeks before commemoration of the northern event.
Virginia's claim as the site of America's first Thanksgiving has been officially recognized nationally since 1963 when Massachusetts-born President John F. Kennedy issued an official Thanksgiving Dav Proclamation affirming the authenticity of the event.
The program opens with a band concert, followed by a performance by the Chickahominy Ceremonial Dancers. The reenactment of the first Thanksgiving begins at 2 p.m.
