Dr. L. Eugene Cronin has been elected Chairman of the newly-formed MarylandVirginia Legislative Advisory Commission on the Chesapeake Bay. Dr. Cronin, director of the Chesapeake Reserach Consortium, is a recognized authority on Chesapeake Bay biology
The bi-state commission was established by actions of the Maryland and Virginia State legislatures to join their efforts in reviewing current state and federal roles within the Bay region. The commission will examine and evaluate issues and available alternatives for improving the coordination of Bay management activities, and will report their findings to the 1980 sessions of the Virginia and Maryland legislatures.
Nine Maryland State Senators introduced a Join? Resolution forming the Maryland Committee. Senate President Steny Hoyer and Sen. Harry S. McGuirk were joined by Senators Byrnes, Boyer, Bozick, Lapides, Crawford, White, and Hopkins in introducing the resolution. Virginia Senators Michael and Gartland introduced the Joint Resolution in the Virginia Senate
This cooperative endeavor between Maryland and Virginia is a major step toward treating the complex aquatic and biologic system of the Chesapeake Bay in a manner which will be both productive and harmonious with the public interests of both states.
